Allievo di Ingres, subì poi l'influenza di Delacroix, in particolare nei dipinti di soggetto orientale. oltre i numerosi ed espressivi ritratti, ricordiamo la Venere del Louvre, la Difesa delle Gallie, l'Andromeda, le Troiane.
Si segnalò pure affrescando numerose chiese e lo scalone della Corte dei Conti, una delle più belle pitture decorative di tutto l'800.
